Red Monuments 9x12 oil

Red Monuments #906
9x12, oil/panel, unframed
$500 , shipping not included

About This Painting

One of the things I enjoy about painting Sedona's beautiful red rocks is the potential for close-ups.  You can zoom in visually onto a feature and make a nice composition out of it, as I did for this.  The painting seems to offer the opportunity for exploration.  Can you imagine yourself hiking up into the blue shadows?

Glorious Evening, 12x24 oil - SOLD

"Glorious Evening"  #818
12x24, oil
SOLD
Featured at Grand Canyon Celebration of the Arts Invitational Exhibit September 2012
About This Painting

Each year at the Grand Canyon Celebration of Arts, in conjunction with the "Plein Air on the Rim" event, invited artists are asked to provide a studio painting of the Grand Canyon.  This was mine for the 2012 event.  Using reference material like plein air sketches and photographs, I created a scene designed to convey the majestic breadth of the Canyon.  This painting was done entirely with a small painting knife, which takes much more time than painting with a brush, but it was a labor of love!

Below are some detail shots of the painting as well as the painting in its frame.  (Click to enlarge!)

December Morning in the Desert, 24x30 oil/canvas

December Morning in the Desert #708
24x30, oil/canvas
$2500 - unframed, shipping not included

About This Painting

I've always been attracted to this scene at Schnebly Hill in Sedona, Arizona.  Besides the dramatic cliffs and spires in the distance, it has an awesome chasm.  I stood on the lip of that chasm for three days, painting this piece on-location.  I needed to paint a big painting of this scene - it is 24x30 - because I wanted to bring to the piece the vast sense of the place.

Below are some detail shots of the painting plus a shot of the painting in a frame as a suggestion as to how it might be framed.  (I could also ship it framed, but that will be an additional fee.)

Snow on Mitten Ridge, 12x16, oil

"Snow on Mitten Ridge"
#742
12x16 oil/panel
$1000 unframed, shipping not included

About This Painting

We don't get much snow in Sedona, so whenever a storm blows through, I try to get out to do a little painting.  Sedona's red rocks can be beautiful with a little coat of snow.  On this day, I went up Oak Creek Canyon to Midgely Bridge and hiked in a bit up this side canyon.  You can see the bridge in the lower right.

Kolob Canyon Snow, 12x24, oil/canvas

"Kolob Canyon Snow"
12x24, oil/canvas
$1500, unframed, shipping not included
Featured at Zion National Park "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran"
2011 Plein Air  Invitational

About This Painting

Before participating in the 2011 Zion National Park "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran" plein air event, I spent some time in the park exploring.  I came across the somewhat-less-known Kolob Canyons area, which is higher than the area around Virgin River.  In April, there were still some scraps of snow lingering in the shadows.  I just loved this view that took me right into the mountains..

Yaki Point View, 12x16 oil

"Yaki Point View" 12x16, oil #883
$1000 - unframed, shipping not included

About This Painting

For the past two years, I've participated in the Grand Canyon Celebration of Arts "Plein Air on the Rim" event.  This is an invitational-only, and I've very proud to have been among the 30 artists invited from across the US and Canada each year.  For this piece, I returned to one of my favorite spots to paint, out on Yaki Point.  The light is always gorgeous on the little bit of tipped rock on the ledge.  I was particularly pleased with the sense of distance I was able to create in the painting.  It's hard to bring that sense to a small format version of the magnificent Grand Canyon!

Slide Rock Apple Barn, 12x16, oil

"Slide Rock Apple Barn" #576
12x16, oil/canvas
$1000 - unframed, shipping not included

About This Painting

This was painted on-location at Slide Rock State Park in Oak Creek Canyon, just up the creek from Sedona, Arizona.  It was early winter, and we'd had no snow yet.  The apple trees were bare, but there was still plenty of color with the winter grasses, the junipers and the rusty roof of the apple packing barn.

Runoff - 9x12, oil

"Runoff" #713
9x12, oil/panel, unframed
$500, shipping not included

About This Painting

"Runoff" was painted in the field near Sedona's Midgely Bridge.  We'd had a snowfall the day before, but it was melting fast.  What engaged me about the scene was the melting snow on the distant cliffs.  It made the rocks so shiny, and light was so incandescent it was blinding!
