About the Artist

Michael Chesley Johnson is an oil and pastel painter working in the American Southwest, coastal Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. He also specializes in teaching small-size plein air workshops in oil and pastel. In the winter, he teaches his Paint Sedona workshops in Sedona; and in the summer, he teaches at Friar's Bay Studio Gallery on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Elected a Master Pastellist by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, he is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and the Pastel Society of America as well as a juried member of Oil Painters of America.  Since 2006, he has been honored to be one of 30 nationally-known artists invited to participate in the prestigious Sedona Plein Air Festival.  In 2011, he also participated in the Grand Canyon National Park Celebration of Arts plein air invitational and the Zion National Park "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran" plein air invitational.  In 2012, he was an Invited Artist for Plein Air Magazine's First Annual Plein Air Convention & Expo in Las Vegas and again participated in the Grand Canyon event.

Michael is the author of Paint Sedona: A Plein Air Painter's Field Guide to Sedona, Arizona; Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Oil and Pastel; and Through a Painter's Brush: The American Southwest.
